Upgrades 10. Essential Tool Kit

I like the idea of being able to fix anything that goes wrong whilst I'm out in the car, rather than just relying on a breakdown company. I already had in my mind a location for a toolkit, somewhere out of the way which would not use any boot space (as this space is at a premium!). Having now removed the standard air filter and replaced with a foam air filter, I have a lot more space under the bonnet to use.

I decided that I would buy a 300mm square black aluminium sheet and fabricate this to become a tools holder which I would slot a tool kit into, this would attach using the same holes that were used for the original air filter. I chose to buy the essential toolkit from Halfords (recommended by Ainsley on the LCSOC forum), and then slightly modified it to have a few more essential Caterham tools. This is what I ended up with:

I also bought a warning triangle which is homed in the full hood bag, which is a permanent fixture on the back of the car (not just for the hood, but also because it acts as a great draught excluder!)

The toolkit basically has the following in it:

The leather folder is from Halfords: Halfords Essential Motorists toolkit, I then added a few more extra bits and removed some of the parts that would never get used, extra items added (and also in the red case beneath the folder) are:

  • PPE gloves
  • Yellow high vis jacket
  • Gaffer tape
  • Extra sockets used on the cars
  • Set of ratchet spanners
  • Hex keys (imperial and metric)
  • Microfibre cloths
  • Bike wire (to fix a broken throttle cable)
